One Hit ≠ A Product

When something works well once, most people think they have a potentially successful product.

A sold-out event, a viral post, a packed workshop. But here's the truth: evidence of interest doesn't equal a scalable system.

A founder came to me excited.

Their launch event had been a huge success with far more people turning up then expected.

The next day social media was buzzing, and 'everyone' was asking when the next event would be.

The founder said to me

We need to scale this!

I asked one question:

What exactly is being repeated here?

Silence.

Because they didn't know yet.

The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

When something works once, we assume we have a product.

A sold-out show. A successful workshop. A viral post. A packed event.

Evidence of interest ≠ a scalable system.

What you have is an event.

And events are important, but they're not products.

Event vs Product: Here's The Difference

An Event Is:

  • Talent + timing + execution in a specific moment

  • Dependent on YOU showing up, pushing every lever, being in the room

  • Successful events prove people care, but not what they actually care about

A Product Is:

  • A repeatable system that works without heroics

  • Clear on what stays the same and what changes

  • Defined by what's essential (not what's accidental)

One hit proves demand exists.

It doesn't prove you know what the product actually is.

Why "Just Scale It" Breaks Everything

Most people skip straight from "it worked once" to "let's scale it."

⛓️‍💥 And that's when things break.

Because you're trying to scale something you haven't defined yet.

You're amplifying the format (the event) instead of the value (the system).

You're repeating the surface but not the structure underneath.

How To Diagnose What You Actually Have

Before you scale, you need to diagnose what you actually have.

Ask yourself:

  • What made this work? (Talent? Timing? The format? The people in the room?)

  • What's essential vs. what's accidental?

  • Can this be repeated without you doing everything manually?

  • What's the product here?

Most of the time, these answers surprise people.

A musician isn't a product but their songs are.

What To Do After Your First Success

🎉Celebrate it. You've proven demand exists.

⏸️Then pause. Don't scale yet.

First, define the system.

Because one hit ≠ a product.

It's an event.

And the work now is turning that event into something sustainable.

That's the "1" before Zero-to-One - the diagnostic work most people skip.
